Clean up screenshots: sort through screen captures quickly

Screenshots happen on the side and stay. After a year there are hundreds, and most have served their purpose. First you should know where they end up.

Where screenshots are saved

Mac: By default on the desktop, with names like “Screenshot 2026-03-02 at 10.15.04”. With Shift + Command + 5 and “Options” you can choose another folder.

Windows: With Windows + Print Screen the image lands in the “Pictures” folder, subfolder “Screenshots”. With Windows + Shift + S the selection is first copied to the clipboard.

Sort out quickly

Sort by name or date and delete everything older than a few weeks. Keep what you need as proof or memory and move it to its own folder.

Less chaos in future

Set a separate folder for screenshots so the desktop stays free, and empty it once a month.

How it works with GetSpace

Screenshots are fastest to review in GetSpace: each image large, one key per decision.

  1. Choose the folder with the screenshots, or the desktop.
  2. Type “Screenshot” in the search box of the filter and narrow it to “Images”.
  3. Delete with left arrow, keep with right arrow. Press M to move important images to their own folder.

GetSpace is a program for Mac and Windows and doesn’t run on phones. Send yourself the link and download it on your computer.
